  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C) and set the rack in the middle position.
  2. Trim woody ends off asparagus and halve spears lengthwise.
  3. In a bowl, mash together the softened butter, horseradish, and a dash of salt.
  4. Toss the asparagus with olive oil and salt and pepper to taste in a 4-sided sheet pan.
  5. Roast the asparagus until just tender, about 10 minutes.
