  1. Preheat the broiler and set an oven rack about 6 inches below the element. Add the chopped onions to the slow cooker and set it to Low to preheat while you broil.
  2. Place ribs on a foil-lined baking sheet, pat dry, and season all over with salt and pepper. Broil until browned on the top, about 5 minutes (watch closely).
  3. Transfer the browned ribs to the slow cooker with the onions. Cover and cook on Low for 4 hours.
  4. Stir in the barbecue sauce and the measured 1/2 cup water (use a splash of that water to rinse the sauce bottle if desired). Cover and continue cooking on Low until the ribs are very tender, about 4 hours more.
