- Trim woody ends from the asparagus. Reserve the tender spear tips, then slice the stalks into 1/4-inch rounds.
- In a 4- to 5-quart pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent, 5 to 7 minutes.
- Stir in the sliced asparagus stalks (not the reserved tips). Season lightly with salt and pepper and cook until bright green, 3 to 5 minutes.
