  1. Mix the ground beef with salt and pepper in a bowl. Form 4 balls then press into thick patties .
  2. Make an indentation in the center for each with your thumb to prevent the burgers from bulging when grilling.
  3. Preheat grill to high. Season patties with salt and pepper. Grill, undisturbed, until marked on the bottom, 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Turn and grill until the other side is marked and the patties feel firm, 3 to 5 more minutes.
  5. Top each burger with cheese during the last 2 minutes of cooking and cover with lid to melt.
  6. Serve on buns and top with lettuce and tomatoes.
